A long time ago, before humans walked the Earth, Ocean slept soundly and did not move. Ocean was in such a deep sleep that he didn’t even breath! Many animals made their home in Ocean and many animals made their home on Land.
There were many animals that inhabited the Earth and out of all of them Seagull had the most beautiful voice. Seagull was lazy and wanted to do nothing more than sing sweetly and listen to its own song. Every time Seagull grew hungry, he would complain about having to go and find food. Seagull would dive deep into Ocean, swim hard, and try to catch a himself a meal. Seagull thought to himself “there must be an easier way to get food.”
One day, when Seagull had just stopped singing, Raven heard Seagull complain to himself about having to go get food. Raven told Seagull that if he woke up Ocean, even for an instant, then Ocean would begin to breath again and with his breath, the water would move and food would be easier to find.
Raven told Seagull that if he could get Ocean to breath again, then there would be so much food just laying around, that Seagull could easily find food and enjoy more time singing to himself. So Seagull flew to Ocean and began to sing sweetly to him. This had no effect. So then Seagull sang as loud as he could and still Ocean would not wake. Seagull then took a big breath and sang even louder, but what came out of Seagull’s mouth was no longer a sweet song, but rather a loud, piercing squawk. Ocean became startled and began to rage and rage. Seagull tried to sing Ocean back to sleep, but could now only squawk.
Eventually Ocean went back to sleep, but was so startled that he awakes often. He also has started to breath again, just as Raven said he would. Ocean takes two big breaths each day and as he does, the water moves in time with his breath. This is the story of how the tides came to be.
